They collect loose screws but no one is going around having their employees learn the size of screws different equipment uses because it just would be rarely if ever needed. There would be no reason for anyone at Best Buy or Geek Squad to have known this. to be fair, I don't think it's too likely that any retail store you called would be able to tell you the size screw used in a laptop you purchased. Their customer service is generally very poor.īut. I'm not a fan of the Geek Squad of Best Buy. (Although an actual description of the screw(s) in question would have been nice). Ron W3WN wrote:So my issue is not with Lenovo. well, I've owned an old IBM Thinkpad (Lenovo built) for years, my company has about a dozen IBM/Lenovo Thinkpads, we just purchase last year about 150 Thinkcenters to replace our Dell desktops, and we have a few IBM/Lenovo servers as well, both here and at the DR site, running in parallel. that I would get better information from another store. I know, this is probably hoping for too much. Why did I call the store? Because experience with multitude of vendors is that you usually contact the point of purchase first, especially when they have a "service" / "warranty service" presence, for home computers. I would not want to purchase another Lenovo FROM BEST BUY, at least not the store closest to my home, based on this. OP - any chance someone was messing with it? I've repaired a lot of laptops over the years and can't say I've ever heard of that happening on its own. Brittany for Lenovo - have you ever heard of screws just falling out of one of your laptops? Of course, I would have just told you to stop on over and I'd have given you some.Īs for the initial problem, though.

Hell, when I ran my PC repair shop I wouldn't have been able to answer that question and I had lots of screws laying around. I certainly wouldn't expect someone at a place like that to know the size of screws, in anything. I have to admit, if I purchased something at a box store and it was past the initial return period (30 days or whatever) the only reason I'd call them would be if I needed help finding the phone number for support of the device. you called Best Buy instead of Lenovo? I'm not sure why you are saying you are not wanting to purchase another Lenovo when your issue wasn't even with them. At least from Best Buy, no matter how good the coupons and discounts are. It's enough to make me think twice about getting another Lenovo laptop.

I paid more for the 2 day shipping than I did for the set (well, I did order 2 sets to have some spares, so it actually was about even) ) and while it lists the part numbers, no where does it say what size or length or even type (SAE? metric? I'd assume metric, considering) they were.Īnd the screw set is arriving on Thursday.

Ironically enough, I did find the service manual online (and I told him, he didn't believe I had the right one, since he couldn't find it. He couldn't even tell me whether or not this would be covered under the warranty, or if the store could get the screws from Lenovo. Suffice to say, he couldn't find (in house or online) a service manual, and his only solution was for me to buy them online.

We went a few more rounds after this I'll spare you the dull details. But I Googled it, and you can buy the screws on eBay!" There are a lot of small screws there!"ĥ minutes of intermittant hold music later. "Yes, I know that, but I need to know what size and what length. You can get them at a hardware store, like a Lowes or Home Depot". Ask if they have the screws, and if not, what size & length so that I can get the machine screws myself. I get put through to their "Geek Squad" desk. Ok, no big deal, right? So I call the Best Buy store we bought it from, to see if this is covered under warranty (ought to be, right?) and do they have the screws? have the screws on the bottom that hold the laptop shell together are missing. I have her shut it down, flip it over, and immediately see the problem. And the shell definitely isn't closed correctly. Last night, she comes up to me and says that the case doesn't seem to be closing right, and something "sounds" funny when she tries to close it. She's home for a week right now (spring break). It's a G50 that we picked up in August, for her to take to college with her. Ran into an issue with my daughter's Lenovo laptop last night. Not quite sure if this is the right venue for this, so if it needs moved, no problem.
